Winterproofing
Your Home
The first winter storm may come sooner than you expect.
Here are some tips for getting your home ready for winter:
- Check your homeowners
insurance to make sure that you have adequate coverage for
your needs -- especially if you live in a part of the country
that experiences rough winter weather.
- Take a look at the filters in your heating system.
If they are dirty, clean or change them right away. A dirty filter
can make your system more expensive to operate - it can also damage
your heating equipment.
- At the first chill of winter, install storm windows
and doors.
- Do you have an air conditioner? Well, you won't
be needing it for a few months. Remove it, or put a cover over
it to keep out drafts.
- Is your home insulated? Do you have enough insulation?
Make a thorough check of your home's insulation before winter
comes. Add more insulation, or replace old insulation as needed.
You'll be sure to save on energy bills.
- Check for cracks, gaps and crevices in your home
(doors, windows, etc.), then fill them in with caulk or other
sealants. This will guard against drafts and keep your heating
bills low.
- In the wintertime, keep an eye on your thermostat.
How warm do you really need it to be? Most experts recomend 68
degrees.
- When the sun is shining, open your drapes or blinds.
Let the sunshine in, and warm your house naturally.
