Holiday Celebrations
Picnics, barbecues and family gatherings are all part
of traditional Fourth of July holiday celebrations in America. And,
for many people, Fourth of July festivities wouldn't be complete
without fireworks. Here are some tips for enjoying fireworks safely:
Safety Tips for Backyard Fireworks Displays:
- Some states have chosen to outlaw fireworks for consumers, while
others have passed laws that limit the type of fireworks available
for consumer use. To check your own state laws, contact the National
Council on Fireworks Safety or
fireworksafety.com.
- Observe local laws. Call your town fire or police station to
see what type of fireworks, if any, are permitted in your area.
- Purchase fireworks only from reliable sources. Stay away from
anything that isn't clearly labeled with the name of the item,
the manufacturer's name and instructions for proper use.
- Never use homemade fireworks. Bottle rockets are particularly
dangerous because they can fly in any direction.
- Use common sense and follow directions before lighting fireworks.
- Never point or throw fireworks at someone.
- Never give fireworks to children. Even sparklers burn hot enough
to melt gold.
- Put used fireworks in a bucket of water and have a garden hose
ready at all times.
- Use away from homes, dry grass and trees.
- Always wear eye protection when lighting fireworks.
- Light one type of fireworks at a time.
- Never relight a "dud." Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then
soak it in water.
- Store fireworks in a cool, dry place, if necessary.
- Dispose of all fireworks properly by soaking them in water and
placing them in a trash can.
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket
Safety Tips for Public Fireworks Displays:
- Obey safety barriers set up for public fireworks displays. Do
not attempt to get close to the actual firing site. Best viewing
is about a quarter mile away.
- Do not touch any debris that may have fallen to the ground during
the show. While the possibility of an unexploded component landing
nearby is rare, report anything unusual to the police or fire
authorities.
- Protect your pets' sensitive ears from the booms and bangs associated
with large fireworks shows by leaving them at home.
- Do not bring any type of consumer fireworks to the show. Crowds
of people associated with large fireworks displays are not the
right place to enjoy sparklers, fountains and other consumer type
fireworks.
Other Holiday Safety Reminders:
- Try to travel during off-peak periods when driving on popular
holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor
Day.
- Make sure your car has plenty of water, snacks and gas in case
you get stuck in heavy traffic on a hot, summer evening.
- Drive defensively especially during holiday periods when many
motorists, excessive speed and alcohol consumption can create
dangerous travel conditions
